Do Robot Mowers Cut to the Edge? The Perimeter Strip

Most robot mowers do not cut all the way to the edge. They leave a narrow uncut strip around the perimeter, and finishing that strip with a string trimmer remains part of owning one. That is the honest answer to "do robot lawn mower cut to edge", and it applies to modern wire-free machines as much as to older wire-guided ones, because the cause is geometry rather than a software shortcoming.

How wide the strip is, and how often it needs attention, varies a great deal. Both depend on the shape of the boundary far more than on the price of the mower.

Why an uncut strip exists at all

Three constraints stack up, and none of them can be engineered away completely.

Start with the cutting circle. On every design in current production the blades sweep a circle narrower than the machine's outer footprint, so the drive stays on cuttable ground while the blades do their work. Whatever sits between the outside of the blade circle and the outside of the chassis is, by definition, ground the mower cannot cut when it is pressed up against something solid.

The second is the positioning buffer. A wire-free mower follows a boundary it learned during setup, and it holds a safety margin inside that line to absorb positioning error. Accurate systems can run a tighter margin than less accurate ones, which is one reason RTK correction matters for edge quality and not only for straight lines.

Last comes obstacle avoidance doing its job. Sensors that stop the machine hitting a fence post cannot distinguish a fence post from a wall the owner would happily let the deck overhang. Detection is deliberately conservative, and conservative detection costs a few inches of grass.

Deck geometry is the part buyers can reason about before purchase. Wheeled designs differ in a way that matters at the boundary. Where the machine physically cannot overhang, the strip is set by chassis geometry and stays where it is.

Edge following modes and what they actually do

Most manufacturers now include a perimeter pass, sometimes described as an edge mode. Instead of only running parallel stripes across the open lawn, the mower first traces the boundary once, keeping its outer edge as close to the mapped line as the positioning system allows, then fills in the interior.

Three edge types, three different outcomes

Talking about edge performance in the abstract is misleading, because a single lawn usually has all three kinds of boundary and the mower behaves differently at each.

Finishing the perimeter by hand

Trimming does not disappear. It changes character.

With a conventional mower, the whole lawn is a scheduled job. Removing individual obstacles inside the lawn, such as a lone specimen shrub or a decorative boulder, deletes a whole ring of hand-trimming around each one. Straightening a wandering border reduces perimeter length outright, which reduces the amount of trimming in direct proportion.
