Deep Robotics Lite3: which variant do you need?

The Lite3 Basic ($2,890) is the entry point: out of the box it walks, trots, runs, climbs stairs up to about 20 cm, and recovers from pushes using its IMU and joint encoders, driven by the included wireless controller. For development it exposes C++ and Python SDKs with ROS 1 (Noetic) and ROS 2 (Humble) packages, plus URDF and MJCF models for Gazebo, MuJoCo, Isaac Sim, and PyBullet — so policies train in simulation before they ever touch hardware. A 7.5 kg payload deck takes cameras, lidar, or a small arm.

Moving up the range, the Lite3 Basic AI ($4,968) and Lite3 Venture ($6,480) sit between the Basic and the Lite3 Pro ($12,510), which arrives perception-ready: onboard NVIDIA Jetson compute, factory-calibrated front and rear stereo depth cameras, and a higher-capacity battery worth roughly 30 percent more runtime. The Pro ships with a SLAM demonstration and waypoint navigation working out of the box — map a building once by teleoperation, then send goal poses. The Lite3 LiDAR ($18,270) tops the family for teams that need laser mapping from day one.

Batteries are hot-swappable across the family, with roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours of continuous walking depending on variant, and a spare Lite3 Controller — with hardware e-stop and 100 m line-of-sight range — is stocked in our accessories for second operators or replacements. The Lite3's IP54 splash resistance handles light rain, short grass, and packed gravel; it is a research platform, not a submarine.

Deep Robotics Lynx M20 Pro: built for industrial inspection

The Lynx M20 Pro ($61,200) is a different class of machine: a wheel-legged platform with IP66 sealing (dust-tight, protected against powerful water jets), an operating range of -20 C to 55 C, and a 15 kg effective payload (50 kg maximum) for serious sensor packages. Factory-installed dual 96-line LiDARs — around 860,000 points per second combined — plus wide-angle cameras drive an autonomous navigation stack that builds its map online: teach a patrol perimeter once, and the robot patrols it on its own, returning to an optional dock to recharge.

It also speaks industrial. ROS 2 Humble is the control interface; MQTT, OPC UA, and Modbus over TCP are supported through the SDK; and pre-built AWS IoT and Azure IoT Hub connectors push inspection data into existing monitoring systems. Typical deployments are substation inspection, pipeline patrol, and large-facility perimeter security. LimX TRON1: the biped in the legged lineup

The TRON1 EDU rounds out the collection for locomotion researchers: a point-foot biped standing about 1.4 m and 65 kg with 12 actuated joints, onboard NVIDIA Jetson Orin compute, and first-class support for the sim-to-real reinforcement learning pipeline (Isaac Sim, MuJoCo, and Gazebo environments with published training scripts). It walks at 1.5 m/s sustained with short bursts to 3.5 m/s, handles 25 cm steps and 20-degree slopes, and includes a second hot-swappable battery. It is a supervised-lab research machine, build-to-order on a 6-to-10-week lead time.

How to choose a quadruped robot

Choose by workload, not spec sheet. Teaching labs and first research projects: Lite3 Basic. Perception and navigation research: Lite3 Pro or Lite3 LiDAR. Outdoor industrial inspection with weather exposure: Lynx M20 Pro — the only IP66-sealed platform here. Bipedal locomotion research: TRON1, or its smaller sibling in our humanoid robots collection. If your payload is a specific sensor or arm, check the payload budget first: the Lite3 deck carries 7.5 kg, while the M20 Pro carries 15 kg effective.

Plan operations around batteries and environment. Hot-swappable packs mean a two- or three-battery rotation covers a full working day, and runtime figures assume flat ground — stairs, payload weight, and cold weather all shorten them. Indoors, expect vacuum-cleaner noise from a trotting Lite3 (65 to 70 dB at 1 m); outdoors, respect each platform's IP rating and towel the joints dry after wet runs to prevent corrosion.
