Can You Leave a Robotic Pool Cleaner in the Pool?

Can you leave a robotic pool cleaner in the pool between cycles? For a floor-cleaning robot, the answer is no, and the manufacturers say so in their own documentation. Beatbot's Sora 30 product page states that continuous submersion shortens unit life by exposing seals, motor housing and filter components to chlorine, salt and UV around the clock, and puts the difference at one to three years of service for a cleaner left in full-time against five to seven years for one that is removed properly.

Surface skimmers are the genuine exception. They are engineered to live in the water. Everything below sorts which is which, and what the immersion actually damages.

What continuous submersion does to a pool robot

A pool robot is not sealed against time. It is sealed against a cycle. The housing keeps water out of the motor and electronics for the hours the machine is working, and then it is supposed to come out, drain, and dry. Leaving it under means the seals never get a dry interval, the o-rings sit permanently compressed against a chemically aggressive fluid, and the plastics take UV from above the whole time the pool is in sun.

Three components carry the damage. Seals and gaskets swell and then take a set, which is how a unit that was watertight in June starts weeping in September. Filter media weakens under constant chlorine contact, which is why Beatbot warns against cleaning baskets with chlorine concentrate at all. And the battery, which is the expensive part, sits at whatever temperature the pool is, held at whatever state of charge it happened to stop at.

Skimmers that live in the pool

The reason a skimmer can stay is geometric, not a matter of better sealing. The Beatbot iSkim Ultra robotic pool skimmer, $649.00 at the time of writing, is engineered for extended in-water operation because its housing sits at the waterline rather than being fully submerged. The electronics ride above the surface. Only the intake and the basket are wet.

That still comes with conditions. Beatbot advises removing the iSkim during shock treatments, severe weather and any period of non-use longer than seven days, and waiting at least 24 hours after a shock before putting it back. It has no self-exit mechanism, so when a cycle ends or the battery runs low it parks against the pool wall and you retrieve it by hand or with the included tether handle. Basket emptying runs every one to three days in heavy debris seasons and every five to seven days when debris is light.

Solar skimmers push the idea further, because they have no reason to come out for charging. The WYBOT F1 solar-powered robotic pool skimmer, $299.98, runs a 33W panel with a 7 litre debris basket and 180 micron filtration, covers around 800 square feet, and carries a 24-month limited warranty. In Smart Mode it operates for 24 hours on a 10 minute work and 10 minute rest cycle; in Standard Mode it runs 8 hours continuously, with a backup battery giving a typical 6 to 8 hours after dark.

WYBOT states the F1 is designed for continuous unattended operation and can stay in the pool for the entire swim season, with the same seasonal exceptions: freezing conditions, a pool cover going on, and high chlorine shock treatments. Note the scope carefully. It cleans the surface only. It does not touch the floor or the walls, so leaving it in permanently solves one problem and none of the others.

What immersion does to batteries and seals

Battery chemistry is the part people forget. Lithium packs do not like being held at a fixed state of charge in warm conditions, and a pool in August is exactly that environment. WYBOT and Beatbot both advise charging on a dry, ventilated surface and avoiding charging in direct sun or above 95F (35 C), which tells you what the pack considers a hostile day.

The counterargument is usually retrieval effort, and current hardware has largely answered it. It runs up to 210 minutes, moves 320 L/min (5,070 GPH), filters to 180 micron, covers up to 1,614 square feet to a depth of 3 m (9.8 ft), recharges in four hours, and carries a 24-month warranty on the main unit. The robot itself weighs 6.5 kg (14.3 lb) with a 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) buoy. Lifting that out is thirty seconds of work, set against several years of service life.

Docking and parking between cycles

If the removal step is what you dread, buy the thing that automates it. The Beatbot Charging Dock, $159.99, is shoreline mounted rather than floating: the cleaner exits the pool at the end of a cycle, drives onto the dock contacts and recharges out of the water. Beatbot lists compatibility with the AquaSense Pro, AquaSense 2, AquaSense 2 Pro, AquaSense 2 Ultra, AquaSense X and Sora 70, and notes that the original AquaSense and the iSkim Ultra require manual charging. Setup takes about 10 minutes and needs a 110V or 240V GFCI-protected outlet within 3 metres (9.8 feet). The dock is rated IP66, and Beatbot advises storing it indoors during winter in climates that drop below -15C (5F).

Self-docking underwater is a different design. The WYBOT S2 Solar with solar-powered charging dock, $1,399.99, returns to an underwater dock when the battery drops below 20 percent and recharges there. Even so, WYBOT's own guidance on that page is to remove the unit after each cycle, rinse it with fresh water and store it shaded and ventilated. The dock automates charging. It does not repeal the chemistry.

Can you swim while the robot is running

Take it out first. The models above are cordless and battery or solar powered, so there is no mains cable running into the water, but that is not the whole of the question. A robot underfoot is a collision and entanglement risk in a pool full of people, its intake and brushes are moving parts, and swimmers stir settled debris back into suspension so the cycle achieves less anyway. Corded units add a transformer and a cable to the equation, which is a stronger reason again. Check your model's manual for the manufacturer's specific position, and in practice run cycles when the pool is empty.

High free chlorine is aggressive toward filter mesh, seals and brush material. Undissolved granules settling on the floor are also abrasive to brushes and tracks.

Does a charging dock mean I never touch the robot?

Not quite. A shoreline dock like Beatbot's brings the cleaner out of the water automatically, which handles the important part. You still empty and rinse the filter basket after cycles, and the dock itself wants indoor storage in hard winters. Underwater docks automate charging but do not remove the need to rinse and dry the unit.

Floor and wall robots come out, get rinsed with fresh water, and dry in shade. Surface skimmers stay in until the water chemistry or the weather says otherwise.
