Do I need a garage for my robot lawn mower? For day-to-day mowing, no. Every mower in this range carries an IPX6 water rating and is built to live outdoors on its dock through the season, rain included. Shelter still earns its keep for reasons that have nothing to do with surviving a shower: sunlight and heat age plastics and batteries, a covered dock keeps charging contacts clean, and a machine parked in full view of the street is an advertisement. Winter is a separate question, and that one has a firmer answer.
What an IPX6 rating actually promises
The Lymow One Plus 5A and 10A, the AIRSEEKERS TRON robot mower and the TerraMow V1000 all state IPX6, and the V1000 pairs it with a rain sensor. The second character in an IP code covers water, and a 6 means the housing withstands powerful water jets from any direction. Rain and lawn sprinklers sit comfortably inside that. The X in the first position is the part owners misread: it means dust ingress was not rated, not that dust cannot get in.
Two more stresses sit outside the rating altogether. Ultraviolet light is not part of any IP test, and years of direct sun fade and embrittle polymer housings, seals and cable jackets. Heat is not tested either. AIRSEEKERS gives the TRON an operating range of 0 to 50 C, which is 32 to 122 F, and the inside of a closed plastic box in July sun can exceed the top of that range without the air temperature coming close. Shelter, in other words, is about slowing the aging of parts the water rating never covered.

There are four realistic answers, and the right one depends on how exposed your dock is rather than how expensive the mower was.

A purpose-made cover is a good illustration of what the job requires, even when it is cut for a different machine. Beatbot's Genuine Dust and Water-Proof Cover -2025, which is made for Beatbot pool robots rather than mowers, is rated at 11,000+ mmH2O for water resistance and uses a UPF 2000+ fabric that the manufacturer says blocks more than 99.9 percent of UV, with a cinch hem for wind. That is the specification a mower cover should be judged against. Buy the cover your mower's manufacturer lists for your model, and check that it either allows docking or gets removed before each run.
Theft deterrence: locks, geofences and where the dock sits
A robot mower is a portable object of real value sitting on open ground for hours a day, so it is worth knowing what your model actually does about that. Lymow publishes the most detail: the One Plus range has geo-fence alerts, a built-in device lock and live GPS tracking, so a mower carried off its lawn triggers an alert and can be located. TerraMow states that the V1000 has anti-theft protection but does not publish the mechanism. AIRSEEKERS does not list anti-theft features for the TRON on its product page, so ask before assuming a particular feature is present.
Siting does the rest of the work. Put the dock in the back garden rather than the front verge, behind a gate if you have one, and out of sight from the sidewalk. Stake the dock down so the whole assembly cannot be lifted in one motion. Record the serial number and photograph the machine, because a PIN lock is only useful to police if you can prove which unit is yours. A motion-triggered light near the dock costs very little and removes the easiest version of the theft.
Winter storage, step by step
This is where a garage, or at least an indoor corner, genuinely matters. Mowing stops when growth stops, and a lithium-ion pack left outdoors through a freeze-and-thaw winter ages faster than one kept dry and stable indoors.
- Clean it properly. Brush packed clippings off the deck and underside, clear the wheel or track housings, and wipe camera windows and sensor faces. Dried grass holds moisture against metal all winter.
- Deal with the blades now. Inspect them, and fit the new set in the autumn rather than hunting for parts on the first warm Saturday in spring.
- Set a partial state of charge. Lithium-ion packs keep best sitting part-charged rather than full or flat. Where the manufacturer publishes a figure, follow it: AIRSEEKERS states the TRON's lithium-ion battery should not be left below 10 percent charge for long periods. With no published figure, a middle-of-the-range charge is the conventional default.
- Store somewhere dry that stays above freezing. An attached garage or a basement corner is ideal. An uninsulated shed that swings from a hard freeze to oven heat under a metal roof is the worst option available.
- Do not try to charge in the cold. Lymow states a charging range of 37 to 134 F for the One Plus, which rules out a mid-winter top-up in an unheated space.
- Check once mid-winter. Power the pack up, look at the state of charge, and bring it back to your target if it has drifted down.
- Decide about the dock. AIRSEEKERS advises storing the TRON in the dock or a covered area for extended off-season periods, so a sheltered dock can stay put. If you bring the mower indoors instead, unplug the dock and cover the contacts.
How to build a shelter that does not create new problems
A home-built garage is a weekend job, and the mistakes are predictable. Size it around the machine plus the dock plate, not the machine alone: the Lymow One Plus 10A tracked mower measures 29.5 by 23.6 by 12.6 inches, and the dock adds to that in every direction. Keep the approach clear, because docking accuracy depends on it. AIRSEEKERS specifies a clear two by two meter space in front of the TRON dock, and building a wall into that zone converts a reliable dock into an intermittent one.
Ventilation beats insulation here. Leave at least one side open or louvered so warm, damp air can escape, and give the roof an overhang so runoff lands beyond the dock rather than on it. Raise the pad slightly, or set it on gravel, so the contacts are never standing in a puddle. Keep metal roofing away from the line between your RTK antenna and the sky; a shelter that shades the antenna trades weather protection for navigation trouble. Anchor the structure against wind, and route the dock cable with a drip loop so water runs off rather than into the connector.
