Inspection Robot Guide: Quadrupeds in Plants and Substations
An inspection robot earns its keep when a route has to be walked on a fixed schedule, somewhere hot, energized, confined or simply tedious to reach. Quadrupeds fit a subset of those routes well: stairs, catwalks, cable trenches, gravel yards and raised thresholds that stop a wheeled cart. They are the wrong tool for plenty of others. What follows is what a legged platform reads reliably, what it cannot do, and how the Deep Robotics machines we stock differ on payload.
What quadrupeds inspect well
Four sensing jobs map cleanly onto a legged platform, because all four are passive, low-power and tolerant of a machine that walks, pauses and points.
Thermal. A thermal camera on a pan-tilt head compares a bushing, breaker or bearing housing against its own history. The value is not any single image. It is the same image from the same standing position every night, so a slow rise shows up as a trend rather than as a failure.
Gauge and indicator reading. Analog dials, sight glasses and lamp states are still everywhere in plants built before networked instrumentation. A robot that returns to a repeatable pose can photograph a dial and run character recognition against it. In most substation deployments this is the task that produces the first measurable saving.
Gas detection. Point sensors for methane, hydrogen sulfide or carbon monoxide ride well on a quadruped because they need nothing but air and time. Sending a robot into a confined space ahead of a person also changes the permit conversation, which is often worth more than the saved labor.
Acoustic. Ultrasonic microphone arrays locate compressed air and gas leaks, and partial discharge in switchgear, from several meters away. The sensor wants to be close, stationary and repeatably positioned, which suits a walking platform. None of these four tasks requires the robot to touch anything, and that is the honest boundary of this generation of hardware.
What quadrupeds do not do well
A quadruped is a mobile tripod for sensors. It is not a maintenance technician, and buying one on the assumption that it will become one is the most common way these projects go wrong.
- Anything needing contact or force. Opening a panel, torquing a bolt or taking a contact vibration reading needs an arm, and an arm on a legged base is still a research exercise at most sites.
- Long flat runs. If the route is a paved perimeter with no steps, a wheeled platform covers it more cheaply and for longer on a charge.
- Speed. Legged platforms walk. A route that takes a person twenty minutes will not take a robot five.
- Unmapped disorder. Autonomy works on taught routes that stay broadly stable. Active construction and moved pallets still break patrols.
- Wash-down and classified areas. Ingress protection varies enormously between models, and nothing in our quadruped range carries a hazardous-area certification. Match the rating of the specific model to the specific area, in writing, before anyone signs.
Payload and power decide what you can actually carry
Rated payload is the number that determines whether a platform can do your job, followed closely by how much power it can hand to that payload. Sensors get heavy fast once you add a pan-tilt head, a gas head, a radio and a mounting plate.
The Deep Robotics Lynx M20 Pro sits at the top of that range at $61,200 at the time of writing. It carries a 15 kg rated payload with a 50 kg maximum static load, and provides an expansion supply of 24 V or 72 V at up to 300 W. It is rated IP66 and specified from -20 C to +55 C, which decides whether the robot can live outdoors.
Everything in the Lite3 family is lighter. The Lite3 Pro carries 4 kg rated payload and exposes 12 V and 24 V rails on the back deck alongside M5 threaded inserts at 10 cm spacing. That covers a camera head and a radio, not a stacked multi-sensor rig. Deep Robotics also notes that off-center loads reduce stair-climbing ability.
Substation patrol configurations
Substation work is the clearest commercial case for a legged robot: the route is fixed, the assets sit in known positions and the hazard of sending a person is real.
The Deep Robotics Lite3 Pro is $12,510 and arrives with perception already fitted: an Intel RealSense D435i depth camera, a wide-angle camera and dual ultrasonic radars, running against an NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX. It runs Ubuntu 20.04 with ROS1 and ROS2, publishes camera feeds, point clouds, joint states and IMU data on standard ROS 2 topics, and provides open SDK and API access in C++ and Python. Read the last two numbers together. An hour and a half to two hours of walking is one or two laps of a medium substation, not a shift. Design the route around a charge.
Where a patrol needs a higher-fidelity map of its own, the Deep Robotics Lite3 LiDAR adds a scanning head at $18,270. Rated payload drops to 2.5 kg and weight rises to 13.5 kg including battery and LiDAR. That trade is deliberate: you are buying perception, not carrying capacity.
Starting with a lower-cost field deployment
Most facilities engineers do not get a fleet approved on the first ask. They get one robot and about six months to show it produced something.

Deployment realities that never make the brochure
Five things decide whether an inspection robot survives its first year on site.
- Charging and battery handling. None of the Lite3 platforms above is quoted with an autonomous charging dock. The packs are hot-swappable, which helps, but somebody still walks out to the robot, and that trip is labor the business case may not have counted.
- Connectivity. Substations and tunnels are hostile to Wi-Fi. Decide early whether the robot streams live or stores and forwards on return. The Lynx M20 Pro runs dual octa-core industrial processors with 16 GB RAM and 128 GB storage each, which is enough to do store-and-forward properly.
- A named owner. A robot with no named owner stops getting charged in about eight weeks. Put the route in the maintenance schedule and treat the machine as a maintained asset.
